Absolver – Innovative Online Brawler Barrels Into The Fight

That one of Sloclap’s biggest inspirations for Absolver is God Hand should be all you need to hear to get excited. While you won’t be able to literally spank opponents here, there will be countless opportunities to do so figuratively in what’s shaping up to be one of the most innovative brawlers in recent memory.

absolver

It’s set in the fallen empire of Adal, where an order of combatants known as Absolvers have established themselves in a bid to keep the peace. You are a Prospect, hoping to prove yourself worthy of joining their ranks in a brutal training ground. That space takes the form of an online world that takes its cues from Dark Souls and Journey, phasing other players in and out of your path. They could be friendly, want to trade or simply mean you harm – and you have no way to tell, other than from how they approach you. (And, if you’re not great at reading body language, the moment their fist meets your jaw.)

JUSTICE SQUAD

You can band together with up to two other players and set out into Absolver’s astonishing-looking, NPC-populated world with backup, or compete in dedicated PvP arenas across the land. Scraps are deliberately ponderous in pace, lending each landed hit a thumping great impact and giving you time to read the nuanced tells of your foe. Combat, you see, is based around customisable combos and stances that you can define before battle.

You build these combos from your Combat Deck, a selection of moves found in the world or learned during encounters. Each move finishes in one of four stances, so to execute a smooth combo you must follow with a move that begins in that same stance.

This branching tree of options is leant further depth by a parrying system that requires you to block in the direction of the incoming attack, while giving you the ability to feign and cancel attacks before launching into another move or backing away. It’s enchanting stuff that is set to be a worthy alternative to the hours we currently spend sessioning Demon Ruins co-op in Dark Souls III.
