Madden NFL 17 – The one footy game EA will win this year

Having played Madden behind closed doors at EA Tiburon’s Florida HQ, we’re happy to report this may be the year it shakes off its recent malaise and returns to mid-2000s form. But it’s nothing to do with improved blocking or new running moves, welcome as those changes are. Nope, it’s all down to longevity – finally a focus, thanks to a revamped Franchise mode.

EA has looked to build a world around your 16 matches per season. It delivers an on-screen ticker that keeps you updated on current results, while a new commentary team (Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis) have contextual discussions based on your position and prospects. Plus – and this is super smart – you have the power to gameplan against a particular opponent by practising against its favourite plays. You also face ‘big decisions’, such as whether to return an injured quarterback early, with Gaudin and Davis again discussing and even criticising your call.

Best of all, after years of fan clamour, is the new Practice Squad. Mirroring real life, this enables you to add an extra ten players to your roster, and train them up without exposing them to real match situations, or having to axe a veteran – but there’s a risk-reward element as another team can poach them at any time. The pieces are all in place for a monster year. Find out if it delivers in our upcoming review
