Now this is how you bring a beloved PlayStation legend back to life. After a five-year hiatus, Lara roared back to relevancy with an adventure as inspired by Nathan Drake as it was old-school Crofty. Crystal Dynamics reset the series mythology with a tale that wove a new origin story for the fresh-faced archaeologist ass-kicker. Stranded on the beautiful (if brutal) island of Yamatai, Lara had to save members of her expedition while battling a deranged band of cultists.
With the focus very much on shooting and showy set-pieces, rebooted Raider owed a lot to Uncharted. But while Croft snuck a cheeky peek at Nate’s homework, her adventure offered far more player agency. Platforming sections demanded keen timing, while Yamatai’s sandbox hubs were stuffed with side-quests, making them rife for exploration.
Despite Lara’s AK-toting exploits, Crystal Dynamics didn’t abandon the series’ quizzical, adventuring spirit, thanks to challenge tombs. These optional, bite-sized conundrums didn’t just offer snazzy physics puzzles, but helped Lara rekindle her PS1 past in a game that so often looked to move into a certain other thief’s domain.
