Fun fact: i once spent three hours in an old man pub finding out i was surprisingly good at Jenga. My little digits, it turns out, are way less shaky than i thought. So you’ll understand my delight at the release of tricky towers, a devilishly moreish 2D take on the world’s favourite block-stacking party treat.
Brick building is the name of the constantly swaying game, as this puzzler whisks together towerfall, tetris and tumble, then blends them into an addictive cocktail. Whether working through 50 fiendish singleplayer trials or indulging in a frantically madcap brand of four-player couchplay,1 tt’s cartoon wizards must swiftly arrange falling shapes into ramshackle structures.
There are three gametypes, each of which has you gasping at the fickle nature of physics. in Races, you have 60 seconds to erect a tower high enough to reach an end zone, where it must then stand for an agonising three seconds.2 Survival tasks you with stacking a structure without letting any pieces topple, and Puzzle inverts the whole concept by asking you to balance bricks below a low-hanging laser.
It’s disgustingly compelling. The tightrope tactics of rotating bricks to fit together as your tower becomes more precarious is a hoot. Power-ups further spice up the action, be it vines that tether blocks together or chains that prevent you from turning them – the latter is a despicable (read: awesome) roadblock to throw at pals in multiplayer. Granted, couchplay is never as intensely adversarial as towerfall, yet the generous single-player helps bolster a package that makes the simple act of stacking utterly cracking
