How To Dominate at Overwatch

overwatch-heroes

Step 1: mix and match it up

If you’re not switching characters regularly, you’re at a huge disadvantage. Step away from your waifu – you need a third Widowmaker like I need a licence to practise medicine. (Bad example?) Constantly evaluate the opposing team’s lineup.

Reinhardt’s damage-blocking shield does diddly squat in the face of Symmetra’s photon projector, and her wall-mounted turrets can give his vulnerable back a sneaky death-massage. It’s here that Winston’s limp lightning gun shines, wiping those mini-sentries. Hanzo’s Scatter Arrow also counters them and, more importantly, that goddamn Easy mode robot Bastion. Fire at the floor in front of your target for max damage. One more tip: the class system isn’t concrete. Tank Zarya’s an effective Support, while Support Symmetra excels at early-game defence.

Step 2: know your maps (and their secrets)

Take it from me: skilled stalking means taking advantage of your surroundings. Like most successful shooters, Overwatch’s maps hide plenty of useful environmental quirks. The Hanamura Gap’s pretty tasty. Found at the side of the Hanamura map between the first and second objectives, it’s a shortcut that shaves precious seconds off a push. Genji, Tracer, Lucio, Reaper and Mercy are just a few heroes with abilities that easily clear it. Mei, too, if you use her ice wall as a bridge. Diagnosis: mind blown. Ick. I always hate getting brain matter on my shoes.

When bypasses fail (and boy, the Doc’s been there a few times), bash your foes off edges. There’s a void in the middle of Ilios’ second control point. Switch to D.Va or Pharah and dunk unsuspecting fools with your mech’s boost or that knockback grenade.

Step 3: work together to win together

Overwatch’s pitch-perfect audio and communication tries valiantly to reduce the need for talking to other humans, but there’s only so much socialising it can spare us. Your hero’s Ultimate ability is their most powerful tool, and nearly all of them rely on teamwork to be true gamechangers. Take Graviton Surge, Zarya’s enemy-magnet. Unlike Mei’s similarly immobilising Blizzard, it doesn’t do damage. Shout at your teammates when you’re ready, then have them release Ultimates such as Hanzo’s Dragonstrike or Junkrat’s RIP-Tire. Boom – pentakill.

The same’s true of Zenyatta’s Ultimate, Transcendence. It’s most effective when your team all stay close, constantly auto-healing everybody and nullifying nearly all enemy Ultimates headed your way. I’d expect nothing less from a dude with balls of steel.
