Released less than a month before Marvel’s eerily similar but vastly superior Captain America: Civil War (see left), BVS is an abject lesson in how not to launch a cinematic universe. Picking up in the aftermath of Metropolis’ devastation in Man Of Steel, it sees an ultra-cynical, violent and mopey Dark Knight take the fight to Supes to safeguard Earth against Kal-El’s apocalyptic potential. Clark, meanwhile, must also deal with master manipulator Lex Luthor. Wonder Woman shows up for five minutes.
A disaster on every level, BVS only widens the chasm between DC and Marvel on the big screen. The plot is nonsensical, the action awkwardly choreographed, the cinematography offputtingly gloomy, the music dreadful and Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor terminally annoying. Worst of all, the big fight – the primary reason for the film’s existence – underwhelms and is over in a matter of minutes before descending into an incomprehensible maelstrom of CGI featuring a creature that looks like a sentient potato.
At over two-and-ahalf-hours long, with barely a single moment of levity, BVS is a joyless slog. As the launch pad for DC’s extended universe, it’s even worse. Rather than organically weave its sequel-teasing Justice League cameos into the narrative, it pauses the action so Wonders can sit in front of a laptop and watch some teaser trailers before the main event. It couldn’t feel more cynical.
