Captain America: Civil War – This time, it’s phwoar

Comic book cinema doesn’t get much better than Marvel’s latest slugfest. A superior Avengers movie to last year’s Age Of Ultron, Captain America’s third “solo” outing sees Team Cap and Team Shell Head square off in some of the best action scenes ever committed to superhero celluloid.

When their latest mission goes disastrously wrong, the Avengers are given an ultimatum – accept UN control, or hang up the spandex. Freedom fan Steve Rogers takes a stand against, but Tony Stark throws in with the authorities. Caught in the middle is Steve’s BFF The Winter Soldier.

The culmination of 12 films’ worth of setup, Civil War signals Marvel’s emotional maturity as storytellers, with a willingness to address the human cost of its characters’ destructive actions in a thoughtful way. Remarkably, despite its colossal cast, every character gets a moment to shine. It doesn’t even fall foul of Marvel’s Achilles’ heel – forgettable villains – because here, its beloved heroes are its villains.

Consistently funny and thrilling, Civil War also features the greatest superhero scrap of all time, in which guest combatants Ant-Man and Tom Holland’s all-new Spider-Man steal the show from Marvel’s elder statesmen. In a word: super.
