Tomb Raider: The Angel Of Darkness – The French Farce

Pffh. The Angel Of Darkness? More like Tomb Raider: Total Franchise Killer. Lara’s PS2 debut was a sad misstep. Largely savaged by critics, it failed to meet sales targets and it stunk the joint up so heinously that the series was swiftly transferred from Core Design to Crystal Dynamics. Oh, and it also introduced a hugely irritating sidekick called Kurtis Trent – or Tomb Raider’s answer to Poochie, if you’re a long-time Simpsons fan.

It’s not that Angel Of Darkness didn’t try. Quite the contrary. Core clearly had grand ambitions for the black sheep of the Croft herd. New moves, such as an army crawl, and more nuanced hand-to-hand combat tried to make Lara a more ass-kicking explorer, while optional conversations with NPCs even saw Crofty dip her toes into RPG waters.

Despite these additions, it was clear Tomb Raider was struggling to keep up in a climate that had been forever changed less than two years before by Grand Theft Auto III. Lara’s fussy platforming now felt restrictive, while a largely Paris-based plot revolving around a divine demon seemed absurd after Liberty City’s biting wit. Indeed, this was such a muddled dud, it took Lara a decade to rebound fully.
