Tomb Raider III – Choose your own adventure

Gathering the scattered remnants of a meteorite was the aim of the game this time around, though the route on which Lara set out to do it had been significantly altered from the series’ previously linear style.

No, no, TRIII didn’t go open-world (we’re not quite that far along the timeline). Instead, besting the opening levels in India saw our heroine, and therefore the player, faced with a choice. Where from the pool of London, the Nevada desert and the South Pacific should we go next? Once those three giant areas were out of the way, it was a final trip to Antarctica for the freezing finale.

Lara’s movement repertoire grew even further, with a sprint, as well as a crouch and a crawl, cropping up for the first time. We also saw new weather, including rain and fog, alongside deadly wet quicksand and a grand total of four vehicles – the quad bike the pick of the bunch.

With its punishing difficulty, plenty of controllers were gnawed upon, but the huge amount of visual variety on offer – the night sky of London clashed vividly with the bright sunlight of Nevada, for instance – ensured this cut through for the third year on the bounce to continue Tomb Raider’s meteoric rise.
