With three Tomb Raider titles under her utility belt, it was time for a different perspective on Lara Croft – from above, as she fell to her death in a collapsing temple. Yes, this was the game that dared bump off PlayStation’s greatest heroine.
But before the finale had us dropping our DualShocks in disbelief, The Last Revelation packed in subtle refinements of the series’ strengths. Lara had learnt to shimmy up and down ropes (to avoid being eaten alive by scarab beetles à la that The Mummy scene), swing on them, and shuffle along ledges. More capable than ever, her new skillset included the ability to backtrack to previous levels – incredibly handy for solving puzzles, digging up alternative routes and hunting down all those missed items.
Forget Lara’s passport – the majority of the action was set in just the one location. A painstakingly rendered Egypt played host to our hunt for the Amulet Of Horus, as well as the inevitable chase once we accidentally released the Set’s spirit into mentor Werner Von Croy… whoopsy daisy.
Super-slick and polished, it was no wonder Lara’s hands slipped on that fatal ledge. How could she possibly clamber out of the afterlife?
